Who Asked You? by Terry McMillan - Brown Mommy Book Choice

For anyone who doesn't know, I am a huge fan of Terry McMillan's work. I read her books Mama and Waiting to Exhale when I was about 15 years old and they grew me up.

I read How Stella Got Her Groove Back at 18 and you could NOT tell me I didn’t go to Jamaica and meet Winston myself. The writing was that vivid.

Her latest book, Who Asked You?, is scheduled to be released this month and it is definitely on my reading list.

According to this Huffington Post article,  McMillan will tackle some of the biggest issues impacting the modern black family. She’ll cover topics such as grandparents raising grandchildren, incarcerated black men, poverty, comeuppance and interracial relationships. However, she’s going to let the stories be told through the voices of the characters and I personally believe that is when Ms. McMillan is at her best.  This should be a good read.

We’d love to have a few others read along for open discussion.

Also, Terry McMillan is scheduled to make an appearance, here in Pittsburgh, at the Byham Theatre, on September 30th, 2013. If you’re interested in doing a meet up at that event, let us know. A few Brown Mommys plan on being there.
