What Did Mia Say to Lance? A Best Man Holiday Review

Wow! This movie exceeded my expectations. The love/sex scenes, character dynamics and sheer beauty of the actors and settings definitely put me in the mood for hot chocolate, Boy II Men's "Let it Snow" and putting on my Mrs. Claus suit for the hubby. But, the part of the movie that moved me the most was the relationship between Lance and Mia. From where they started back in '99 as a couple on the cusp of love and infidelity to today's dynamic duo whose commitment and ability to uplift one another seemed to defy gravity, I surely found myself wondering if a relationship like that could exist outside of the big screen.
Nonetheless, my favorite part of the Best Man reunion was when Mia (played by Monica Calhoun) made a fourth quarter summons to fine ass Lance (Morris Chestnut) via phone as he struggled to break a highly anticipated rush record on the field. Amid his upcoming retirement and some health struggles at home, Mia was able to lift Lance's confidence high enough that he overcame some pretty heavy obstacles to meet the record. The movie doesn't reveal exactly what Mia said to Lance, but as a wife I am going to guess. I think she reminded him who he is, who they are and that she was never far from him. Mia knew the power of the marriage bed.
Most Saturday mornings my husband and I do something that is vital to the health of our relationship. We sit in the bed and talk. We get on the same page by reassuring one another we have the same goal, despite sometimes differing ideas on how to get there. During those talks we align not only our spirits, but our minds. I think Mia and Lance, in imaginary movie world, did something at least similar to this. In her ability to move Lance using just words were hidden some late night talks, midday arguments that were resolved by midday conversations and some real, unfiltered meetings of two minds. These little instances of pillow talk (and big talks too) solidify that your significant other is not just a physical presence in your life. But, that he/she also serves as your sixth sense. The part of you that is confident enough to call goals and aspirations into manifestations.
While many of the brown mommys I saw the movie with were crying, I found myself loving their relationship despite the loss they were experiencing. The way they interacted and loved one another made me hopeful that although my marriage would never match the perfect imagery I held as a child, it would eventually become a much more graceful dance.
So, out of Robin and Harper, Candace & Julian, Quentin & Shelby, Jordan and her tall cup of vanilla latte Brian and Mia and Lance which relationship most resonates with you?
