She Built it! A short lesson about gifted children.

I'm sharing my daughter's latest creation. She constructed a house out of a FedEx box. She even took some electronic device apart so she could add the utility meter on the outside of the house. (middle picture)
When you have a child that can look at a box or some other everyday object and imagine it could be something else, that's giftedness. Creativity is being gifted.
Schools would have us believe that a gifted child is only an academically smart child. Being academically inclined is only part of it. Being gifted is mostly about creative problem solving and seeing the world as multidimensional.
Gifted children are extremely curious and love to get solutions to their most pressing questions. And they know there is not just one way to find a solution, they consider multiple angles.
I only wish public schools would treat all children as gifted. Allow them to be curious and develop their creativity. Our children would learn and retain more information.
Until such time as that happens, please allow your child(ren) to explore, create, and be curious. There is science to support that this helps children do better academically. We'll talk about that later.
So, remember this the next time your child uses cereal boxes to create a robot. My girl did that too!
