Mommys, Drive-Ins Need Your Help

When most people think of drive-ins they think of the 60's, poodle skirts and roller skates, I know I do.  But, there are still a lot of drive-ins around the city and while they may not be as modern as a Lowe's movie theater they do represent a great family past-time.  Drive-ins make a movie more than a movie and its way more interactive than 3D.

Honda has started a campaign called Project Drive-in where mommies, daddies and kids can vote to save their favorite drive-in.  If you are not aware, many drive-ins have closed over the last few decades because of decreasing popularity and the 'go digital or go dark' movement which requires outdoor theaters to upgrade from analog to digital equipment.  Most drive-ins are family-owned and cannot afford the digital change.  The equipment can range from $30,00 to $75,000 depending on whether it is new or used.  Honda, in conjunction with Sony, is giving the power to the people by allowing us to vote to save 5 drive-ins across the country.  Honda will close the digital divide for the 5 theaters with the most votes by purchasing their digital equipment.  Pittsburgh and its surrounding neighborhoods have quite a few theaters.  Here is a list of them:

  • Evergreen Drive-in, Mt. Pleasant
  • Twin Hi-Way Drive-in, Robinson Township
  • Dependable Drive-in, Moon Township
  • Riverside Drive-in, Vandergrift

And there are actually a lot more listed on IHearthPgh.
