Magazine Launches Exclusively for Black Girls

It seems another woman has birthed brilliance.  Andrea Butler says when she was a kid she was always buying magazines.  So much so that her mother said she had an obsession. But, she says she noticed one flaw in the pages of Seventeen and Teen Vogue as she perused the pages for the latest in fashion and pop culture: no Black girls.  So she vowed that one day she would change that, and now she has.  Last year, Butler launched the eclectic Black girl's guide to life in the form of a quarterly magazine with Sesi. Ms. Butler took some time from her busy schedule to chat with Brown Mommy Cynthia Mendoza about her mission and her inspiration for Sesi.  Press PLAY to listen or read on.

Mommy Mendoza: Yes, I definitely agree with that. I don't have daughters, but I'm a girl and even as a Black woman the magazine selection is limited. So, I can imagine what the landscape looks like for our little girls. What do you think makes Sesi different from your average popular magazine like Seventeen and Teen Vogue?

Andrea: Well first of all, you find Black girls everywhere. We have typical departments like fashion and beauty and dating. But, we also have a Work it Girl section where each issue we profile a career that the readers may not think of....We talk about social issues and in our Winter issue we talked about color complex and how it affects Black girls. You're not going to find that in Seventeen.

Mommy Mendoza: Andrea, you guys also have some pretty amazing teenage celebs who have graced the cover of Sesi?

Andrea: We've had Alix Lapri on our cover. We've had Mindless Behavior, Jacob Latimore, KeKe Palmer. Our next issue is going to have Sidney Park on the cover. She plays Gabby on the show "Instant Mom." And, after that our summer issue is going to have Imani Hakeem on the cover from "Everybody Hates Chris." She just played Gabby Douglas in the Lifetime Movie.

Mommy Mendoza: Yes, I also noticed T.I. and Tiny's OMG Girls on one of the covers. And Andrea how can moms get a Sesi subscription for their daughters?

Andrea: We sell our subscriptions on our website at SesiMag.com. Just click the subscribe tab. It's $10 for a year, right now we are quarterly. And, it's $3.99 for one issue.

Mommy Mendoza: FYI, the magazine is only published in print. However, Sesi offters an online component on its blog sesimag.com that gives a taste of the print edition's flavor.

Andrea thanks for your time and I can't wait to hear about all of the exciting things happening at Sesi Magazine. Mommys if you want to learn more about Sesi you can follow Andrea on twitter at @SesiMagzine that's SESI Magazine, like their page on Facebook page or follow the Sesi Magazine blog at sesimag.com.

Till next time this is Mommy Mendoza from BrownMamas.com providing you with the best info to make your motherhood journey matter...PEACE!!!
