How Does Your Garden Grow?

The girls learning how maintain an indoor organic garden.

Is it possible to teach your kids to do things that you don't even know how to do?  By  the looks of these sprouts in these potted plants, I'd say yes. (See Below)

Here's the thing: I do not know how to garden. I've always wanted to do it, but it's just something that I am not good at. Unless a plant is artificial, we just don't seem to mix.

So, when I got an email last week from the Girls Coalition inviting me to a mother/daughter workshop hosted by Women for a Healthy Environment and saw that learning to garden was on the itinerary, I said - SIGN ME UP.

Sure enough, we went to the event and the speaker gave us advice on how to best grow indoor organic lettuce plants. In addition to that, my girls learned how to make their own hand sanitizer, all natural perfume and cleaning products. Yes folks, Brown Mommys is going green.

My girls asked lots of questions and we all learned so much. I think I may have gotten to the root of the problem with respect to my lack of a green thumb. Pun intended.

Since we've taken the plants home, the girls have been watering them; ensuring they get enough light and my little one has done a good of job talking to the plants. That whole carbon dioxide thing, I guess? Anyhow, cutest thing ever.

Well, yesterday we saw the fruits - or should I say sprouts of our labor -because little tiny buds had appeared. Together, we actually got these seeds to grow.  Who knew?

Tomiyah watering her seeds. It’s best to do it gently, with a spray bottle.

This whole thing got me to thinking about how I am always questioning myself about how I'll be able to teach my girls about this big crazy world when there is so little I know and seemingly so little that I can do?

I now know that I don't have to have all the answers or capabilities; I just have to usher them into the presence of people who do.

What are some ways you teach your kids to do things that you really aren't the best at doing?

Pretty soon, we’ll have lettuce.
