Happy Birthday Trayvon
Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton's son, would have turned 19 years old today.
He would have been college freshman and a month into his spring semester at either the University of Miami or Florida A&M.
Hopefully, his anxiety about college would have started to wane as he became more comfortable with his classes and being away from his family for the first time. This sweet boy would have found that even though he acted grown up over winter break that he still missed his mommy and his brother.
By now he would have already made friends who would be forever be a part of his life. Friends with whom he would be making spring break plans or debating which fraternity to pledge. He would even be texting and calling his friends back home less as he immersed himself into college life and prepared to decide if he was going to do aeronautics after all.
It's easy for me to imagine his life because, to me, a black mother, Trayvon was just another boy who happens to be black. A boy who could have been mine or a relative of mine. Another "Little Black Boy Wonder". Happy birthday Trayvon.
