GIVEAWAY: Win a Free Copy of The Red Shirt Kids & $75 Amazon Gift Card

Here at Brown Mommys, you know we are huge advocates of childhood literacy and have made a personal commitment to raising dynamic young readers. For this reason, we are overjoyed to participate in the promotion of the book, “The Red Shirt Kids”. We received a free copy of the book to review and are participating in a sponsored giveaway. As always, our opinions are our own and we're happy to tell you that we really enjoyed the book.

Below, we'll provide more details on how to win a free copy of the book and a $75 Amazon gift card.  More on that later.

ABOUT THE BOOK

For any parent looking for a unique book that can provide your tween or teen (ages 8-13) with an imaginative spin on problem-solving, friendship, leadership and courage -  this book is for you.

The book is written by Bryce Clark, a former writer for the children’s show Yo Gabba Gabba and his Dad, Kim B. Clark, the President of Brigham Young University – Idaho.

The book is centered on eleven-year old Mike Smith and his twelve-year-old sister, Amy. The Smith family is in the process  of moving to New Hampshire from Boston. Like most kids who are faced with transition, the Smith children are concerned about starting a new school, making friends and adjusting to their new environment. Things our kids can identify with, right? They are also none too impressed with the worn down old mansion they’ll be moving to. It doesn’t take long for the kids to make a new friend whose name is Sam. While exploring the attic in their new house, they happen upon an old chest with red shirts inside. When they put on the red shirts, they each become endowed with certain magical powers and the adventure begins there.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Throughout the book, they learn to use these magical powers to try to solve a local town mystery in partnership with an unlikely ally, the town bully. While the magical powers are cool, what I found to be more impressive, was the way characters also had to rely on their human powers of  loyalty, honesty, ingenuity and common sense to work through the problems they faced in solving the mystery. The book teaches the reader these basic laurels without being preachy -  which I think is great.

These are some of the very same values I try to instill in my kids everyday and I found the book to be a real joy to read.

There are a lot of books out there on the market vying for our kids’ attention, so it is important to ensure books like the Red Shirt Kids are on their radar as well. My daughter has already started reading the book and so far,  she likes the fast-paced story line as well as the likeability of the main characters.

I think your young reader would enjoy it, too.
