Do People Say You’ve Changed?

Take a minute and watch this hilarious video of Tia Mowry imitating her sister, Tamera Mowry – Housley of the new daytime talk how, The Real.

In the clip, Tia and her husband Cory Hardict can be seen conversing how Tamera has changed since becoming a wife and a mother. They don’t feel the changes are genuine or indicative of who Tamera truly is as a person. The word conservative is even thrown around. Where I’m from, we like to call this getting brand new.

As recently as about 3 years ago, I developed the ability to tell the two twins apart. They are completely different. Tia is urban and edgy while Tamera comes across as more light, airy and discreet. Tia’s face is angular.  Tamera's features are softer. I get the sense Tia keeps it real while Tamera will spare feelings to save face. The comparisons could go on, but I’ll stop there.

From what Tia is saying, I don’t think her issue is solely that Tamera has changed, as much as she is concerned that Tamera is pretending. Her new role as a wife and a mother seem to be  an exercise of going through the motions of what she thinks a perfect wife and mother is supposed to do versus how to color those roles with the reality of her authentic self.  Do twins have he ability to tell when the other is faking it?

As a wife and mother, I can identify with both sisters. On one hand, your priorities have changed which means the demands on your time and how you handle things are bound to evolve. But, on the other hand, it is important to maintain the essence of who you are and not get lost in an elaborate performance that is sure to lead to exhaustion and fatigue.

Now, who is to say the stepford wife archetype is not Tamera’s true identity?

Becoming a wife and a mother could have been an awakening of the person she’s always been. It may require adjustment on the part of her family to get accustomed to who she is now at this juncture in her life. In any event, her sister found a humorous way to get the point across and we love both of these brown mommys.

Has this ever happened to you? Has someone ever told you you’ve changed? If so, did you agree? How did you handle it? Speak on it Mamas. We want to hear from you.
