5 Books Every Fatherless Black Dad Should Read

Subject: Books for Black Dads

We must continue to take seriously in our communities if we are to overcome so many of the trials that we've faced in the aftermath of white supremacy and colonialism. One of the things I'm most proud of in my marriage is that my husband doesn't mind picking up a good book. He's learned so much about business, marriage and parenting by listening to the life stories of authors.

If you're looking for a way to enhance the collective knowledge of the men in your life, check out this list of books for Black dads.

Becoming Dad, Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood by Leonard Pitts Jr.

In this new age of parenting Black fathers are shaking the 'dead beat Black dad' stereotype in droves combing their daughters hair, teaching their sons what real masculinity is about and running to the altar like never before, but that doesn't mean that they weren't raised by dead beat Black fathers themselves. Leonrad Pitts addresses this oxymoron in Becoming Dad. Leonard lets the men speak for themselves as each chapter focuses on how generational curses of fatherless show up in lives of Black fathers even when they are trying their best to be the best dad. Great read!

Asafo by Mwalimu Baruti

What does it mean to protect, provide genuine love for and live in a white supremist world as a Black man? Baruti answers this question with resolute common sense in his book ASAFO. Not for the non-reader, Baruti take a no nonsense approach to how Black fathers need to answer the destructive riddle of white supremacy when it comes to standing for our families and our communities.

Learning to Live Loved: When a Fatherless Girl Becomes a Christian Woman by Delmesha Richards

Kindezi the Kongo Art of Babysitting by Kia Bunseki

This book is a keepsake. Every household should have it and every couple, married or not, should follow it when parenting and co-parenting their children. Kindezi focuses on the importance, strength and vitality that is offered to communities when they take the art of raising and rearing children seriously. The author paints a picture of child-rearing untouched by Eurpoean colonism and racism and undresses the implications of our complex parenting history in this modern age. Quick, priceless read.

The Warrior Method: A Parent's Guide to Raising Healthy Black Boys by Raymond Winbush

To date one of my favorite parenting books of all time, Ray Winbush demistifies the reality of fighting for our children in the public school system. Dads will walk away from this book with a guide for everything from how to see beyond the cruxes of the current schooling system, to coming of age ceremonies for Black boys and a conclusion on exactly what Black boys need to succeed not only in the classroom, but also in their communities. Love this book!
