A Brown Mommy Product Review – As Seen on TV Ice Cream Maker

Posted by Diamonte Walker

One of my guilty pleasures is purchasing products from As Seen on TV.  My most recent indulgence was the Ice Cream Magic Ice Cream Maker. I figured it would be a good way to teach my daughter a neat little science lesson and enjoy a sweet treat in the process.

This is a great product to try if you’re looking for a creative way to fend off summer brain drain with your little ones.

Below is a picture of the ingredients and supplies we used. The directions are pretty easy to follow.

You will add ice, salt and water to the bottom of the plastic cone chamber as my little one is demonstrating here:

The directions then guide you through how to make the mixture using whipping cream, sugar and vanilla extract. You’ll pour those ingredients into a little metal cup which rests on top of the ice and salt water mixture, place the lid on the cup and then shake.

So, I bet you want to know...did it work?

YES, it did work. It was more of a milk shake consistency, but it definitely looked and tasted just ice like cream.

It really isn’t magic as much as it is science. The heat escaping from the creamy mixture paired with the lowered temperature of the salt water mixture creates an environment where the creamy liquid can freeze and become more slushy. If you’d like a more sophisticated explanation, please go here.

A few Brown Mommy recommendations when using this product:

• Use a more granular salt than table salt. Try sea salt.

• Shake for a good 3 minutes, then unscrew the cap to check and see how it’s forming. It typically freezes around the sides first. If you scrape the sides and then shake again, it should start to thicken up throughout.

• The box says shake for 3 minutes, but to really get a good consistency, you may need to shake for about 5 to 7.

• It makes a really small serving, less than ½ a cup. It’s a little snack, but lots of fun to make.
